Idiopathic hypersomnia

چکیده
This article includes discussion of idiopathic hypersomnia (IH), which is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, difficulty awakening (sleep drunkenness), and undisturbed overnight sleep without cataplexy or known cause of excessive sleepiness. Excessive sleepiness (hypersomnolence) of unknown etiology, which cannot be explained by another disorder, would be considered idiopathic hypersomnia. This should be clearly distinguished from other disorders that could present with complaints of excessive daytime sleepiness, such as narcolepsy, behaviorallyinduced insufficient sleep, circadian rhythm disturbance, obstructive sleep apnea, or from hypersomnolence secondary to a medical condition or medication. These patients frequently present in adolescence and may have symptoms of autonomic nervous system dysregulation, but they are most often affected because of inability to attend to daytime obligations such as school or work. Because the pathophysiology is unknown, management is limited to symptomatic treatment and education.

Comparison of Polysomnography and Multiple Sleep Latency Test Findings in Subjects with Narcolepsy and İdiopathic Hypersomnia.
INTRODUCTION Both narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia are the main causes of excessive daytime sleepiness. In this study, we aimed to compare polysomnography (PSG) and multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) findings in narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia patients. METHODS The files of patients with narcolepsy and hypersomnia who were admitted between 1995 and 2009 were reviewed. We evaluated ...

متن کاملThe Prevalence and Characteristics of Primary Headache and Dream-Enacting Behaviour in Japanese Patients with Narcolepsy or Idiopathic Hypersomnia: A Multi-Centre Cross-Sectional Study
BACKGROUND Because the prevalence and characteristics of primary headache have yet to be thoroughly studied in patients with hypersomnia disorders, including narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia, we examined these parameters in the Japanese population. METHODS In a multicentre cross-sectional survey, among 576 consecutive outpatients with sleep disorders, 68 narcolepsy patients and 35 idiopa...
متن کاملIgG Abnormality in Narcolepsy and Idiopathic Hypersomnia
BACKGROUND A close association between narcolepsy and the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA)-DQB1*0602 allele suggests the involvement of the immune system, or possibly an autoimmune process. We investigated serum IgG levels in narcolepsy. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We measured the serum total IgG levels in 159 Japanese narcolepsy-cataplexy patients positive for the HLA-DQB1*0602 allele, 28 id...

Many patients report symptoms of hypersomnia with mostly excessive daytime sleepiness. According to the second edition of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD2), hypersomnias of central origin are categorized as narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia (IH).1 And narcolepsy can be divided into two categories based on the existence of cataplexy as narcolepsy with cataplexy (NTC...
